People of “Gopnik” subcultures,  from central and eastern Europe, are usually referred to as “slavs,” and these people speak the Slavic language. This is a short history of where the word “Slav squat” came from. These people often squat down while waiting for a bus, taking a cigarette break with friends, etc. While the Asian squat and Slav squat are essentially the same, the Slav squat has recently become popular among fitness enthusiasts.

You can say Asian squat is a shrunken or narrower version of Slav squat, but both are assumed to be the same thing, and the terms are often used interchangeably.

The Asian squat, as it is deeper than the Slav squat, requires a bit more flexibility and strength than the Slav squat and is better for improving mobility.

Why Westerners Struggle With Deep Squatting:

The main reason westerners are unable to do a deep squat is simply that they don’t practice it. All humans are born with enough ankle flexibility to do a Slav squat, but since westerners don’t flex their ankles often, the muscles start to tighten and they lose their ability to go down on their heels. According to physical therapist Bryan Ausinheiler, who graduated from the University of California, San Francisco, you need a minimum of 70 degrees of ankle-flexion angle to be able to squat. Unfortunately, most Americans only have 30 degrees of ankle flexion, which explains why westerners find it easier to deadlift than to squat.

How to Do an Asian Squat:

Begin by resting in the squat position for 60 seconds, and then add 30 seconds each day until you build up to five minutes. It may also be easier for you to get into a position off of the floor rather than try to lower yourself into it from standing. As with any other form of exercise, go slow and, if needed, hold on to something to prevent falling backward.

Resistance bands and exercise balls are great for building strength and improving range of motion. 

Yoga blocks can also help you achieve the correct posture, and foam rollers are great for loosening tight muscles.
